Answer: A
Domestic violence is a significant health problem in the US especially for females. At highest risk are females age 19-29 in families with annual incomes below $10,000, and pregnant women. In addition child abuse has been reported in 33-54% of families in which adult domestic violence has occurred and elderly males and females are also at significant risk. Characteristics that may suggest abuse are: injuries inconsistent with the offered explanation, multiple injuries, injuries in different stages of healing, and a substantial delay between the onset of injury and presentation for treatment. Patients usually have a flat affect, often looking to the partner for approval before answering, and nervousness about leaving the hospital. The spouse/partner may be overly attentive, reluctant to let the patient out of his sight, aggressive and often answers questions for the patient.
