The exmainer should see a visible contraction of the triceps. A slight extension of the elbow may also be seen.

What it means if not normal

Comments

The triceps brachii is innervated by the radial nerve (C6, C7, C8).

If the patient is unable to abduct their shoulder to 90, the triceps reflex may also be tested with the patient’s arm at their side, similar to testing the biceps reflex.
