Name of test

Knee flexion

What it tests

knee flexion

How to do it

have the patient lie supine and attempt to bring the heel as close to the buttocks as possible

The normal response

the patient should be able to bring the heel all the way to the buttock, or at least have the posterior calf abut the posterior thigh

What it means if not normal

the joint is not normal–but note that the body tolerates some loss of flexion quite easily. if one could flex to 110 degrees, most activities of daily living are not impeded

Comments

pain, especially from a posterior horn meniscal tear, may inhibit full flexion
