It is a paired muscle, right and left. When one side fires, its function is to rotate the head to the opposite side, or obliquely rotate the head. In tandem, the two sternocleidomastoid muscles flex the neck and assist in forced inspiration.

Discussion

The sternocleidomastoid is so named because it originates from the STERnum and the CLavicle and inserts on the MASTOID process of the temporal bone. It is a paired muscle, right and left. When one side fires, its function is to rotate the head to the opposite side, or obliquely rotate the head. In tandem, the two sternocleidomastoid muscles flex the neck and assist in forced inspiration.
